Elizabeth (Bet) Margaret Smidt

Elizabeth (Bet) Margaret Smidt, 99, of La Grange passed away peacefully on November 25, 2021; beloved wife of the late Arthur W. Smidt; loving mother of Terrence Smidt and David Smidt; devoted grandmother of Chelsea May, Brian Smidt, and Sara Smidt; cherished great-grandmother of Jenna May, Jamie May, and Edward May; loving mother-in-law of Margie Smidt and Maggie Smidt.

Elizabeth was a faithful member of Lyonsville Congregational United Church of Christ.  She adored her family and cherished her many friends. Being a great friend to so many people, she was never alone as she could make friends everywhere she went, especially at Art’s Tavern in Hillside, IL.  Elizabeth loved to volunteer! She volunteered as a nursing assistant and received a 25-year service award from the VA Bay Pines Hospital in Bay Pines, Florida.  Each year Elizabeth knitted baby booties and caps for new born infants at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and Navajo Nation. Elizabeth also loved vacationing and enjoyed retirement with Arthur at their home in Seminole, Florida. Elizabeth and Arthur were also members of the St. David Welsh Heritage Society in St. Petersburg, Florida. When Elizabeth returned to La Grange, she immediately volunteered and taught knitting classes at King-Bruwaert House in Burr Ridge, Illinois. Elizabeth was also a lifetime member of the Gold Star Wives of America that provides support for the spouses and children of those who lost their lives while serving in the Armed Forces of the United States. Please keep Elizabeth and her family in your prayers.

Memorial visitation and service Noon-1:30 pm, Wednesday, January 12th at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside. Graveside interment private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
