David R. Dowdle, age 92, formerly of Forest Park, IL; beloved husband of Mary Ellen (nee Maren, formerly Gallagher); preceded in death by his late wife, Marion (nee McCarthy); proud father of Laura Dowdle (Peter Huebner), Mary Kane, late Rev. David P., Joan (John) Prescott, Mark (Michele), Daniel (Cathy), Patrick (Angela), Ruth (Scott) Deubel, Martin (Roseanna), Robert (late Bridget), Anne (Greg Paul) and Matthew (Alma); loving step-father to J. Patrick (Joey) Gallagher, Kevin (Kaylee) Gallagher, Brian (Sherry) Gallagher, Timothy Gallagher and Kathleen (Tim) Flannery; proud and loving grandfather of 40 grandchildren and great-grandfather of 21; brother of the late Henry (late Helen) and late John (late Rosemary) Dowdle; uncle and friend of many. David was a former employee of the US Postal Service and Henry Crown Corporation. He loved performing theater, singing, and crosswords, but above all else he loved his family and friends. Visitation Thursday, April 08 from 10am until time of Funeral Mass, 11am at St. John of the Cross Church, 5005 S. Wolf Rd. in Western Springs. All guests must register to attend Mass at www.stjohnofthecross.org/funeral-mass-registration. Interment Private. The Funeral Mass will be live-streamed on the St. John of the Cross Facebook page and  recorded for future viewing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Interfaith Community Partners, PO Box 310, LaGrange, IL 60525. Arrangements entrusted to Hallowell & James Funeral Home, Countryside.   1. Mr. Dowdle, may you rest in peace! I will never forget our trip in high school to the state championships in 1974! I enjoyed Your smile your laughter and your tremendous wit! There will come a day when we meet again and when we do remember, “too fourty”!! Lol!!

  3. Oh Papa, I will miss your wit, laughter, smile. Hugs, singing. From the first day I met the Dowdle family you welcomed me and Aaron with open arms. I’ll always treasure the week you came to AZ and we traveled the state in a RV and the Family cruise. When you came to AZ for our wedding, I will treasure our dance together. You used to tease me and say. “Your my favorite ” and I would say oh Papa
    I can hear you singing!

    I am sorry for your loss. I am unable to attend the wake ot Funeral Mass since I will be recovering from surgery. However, I will have you all in prayer on Thursday. I can picture you mother with open arms to welcome your dad home with David at her side. May the joy and peace of their reunion be a comfort to you all.

  5. To my Dowdle cousins and the extended family of my Uncle Dave, we all understand the pain of loss but cherish the good memories. I will always remember his warm and genuine smile. I have nothing but positive memories filled with laughter and love.

  6. Dearest Dowdle family, I am so sorry to hear about Mr. Dowdle. Deepest sympathy to Mary Ellen and all his children and grandchildren. Always a smile on his face and a hug when we met. A good friend to the Preiwisch family and lots of laughs in ACT IV. He will be missed. Big hug to all.
