Mary Lou Denny

Mary Lou Denny (nee Sayers), 72, of Western Springs, IL, passed away on March 18, 2024. Mary Lou was born in Joplin, Missouri, and was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.

She graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelors degree in speech pathology. She earned her masters degree in speech pathology at the University of Central Missouri.

Mary Lou was a cheerful, optimistic, kind, and determined individual with an effervescent sense of humor. She had an easy laugh, never took herself too seriously and had a knack for putting people at ease. Community service was a cornerstone of Mary Lou’s life. For seven years, she served on the Pillars Board of Directors as Co-Events Director for their annual fundraiser, The Pillars Ball, in which she played a key role in its success.

Mary Lou’s generosity extended beyond her time and money; she had infinite reserves of patience, especially evident during her 14 years as a speech therapist, working with elementary school children who had special needs. She treasured her time with her students and was known for her ability to truly listen and connect with them. Her commitment to education and compassion for others left a lasting impact on those around her.

Pivoting from speech therapy to public relations, Mary Lou and her husband Walt founded Walt Denny Inc., an advertising and public relations firm in 1989 and would run the business side-by-side for 33 years. “Bring home bold results” was their motto in work and in life.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 48 years, Walt Denny, daughters, Valerie (David) Hughes and Katy (Alex) Heaton; grandchildren, Hattie and Teddy Hughes, Elyse, Russell and Luke Heaton; as well as her sister Ruth Ann (Vic) Intag and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Edward Sayers.

A visitation will be held Saturday, April 20, from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a Memorial Mass from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at St. John of the Cross Parish in Western Springs, IL.

A reception to celebrate Mary Lou’s life will take place from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in Dole Hall at Plymouth Place in La Grange Park, IL.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Peter & Paul Community Services in St. Louis (https://ppcsinc.org/) or the charity of your choice.

Mary Lou will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in peace.
