Andrew James McKendrick

Andrew James McKendrick was born on October 14, 1942 to Philip and Jeanne McKendrick, the second son of eventually four brothers and a younger sister.  Andy grew up on the South Side of Chicago in a house full of faith, laughter, and love. He and his brothers enjoyed playing Chicago-style 16 inch softball and ping-pong.

He attended Foster Park Elementary School, just blocks from their house on Wolcott Ave, and then Calumet High School. He eventually graduated from IIT with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Civil Engineering, and loved his work as a structural engineer for the next fifty years.

Andy married Kathy Deane in 1968 and they had four children: Matt, Colleen, Jenny and John. Like his parents before him, he and Kathy built a home of faith, laughter, and love. He thought his kids were the best and his grandchildren were even better.  The family were long-time residents of Western Springs, and Andy enjoyed being able to walk to the train station, the library, Spring Rock Park, Casey’s, and of course Kirschbaum’s Bakery.  He was a Fighting Illini fan, an ABBA enthusiast, and a skilled gardener, with a special interest in unique hostas.  He loved playing board games and spending time with his grandkids.  He was proud of his Scottish heritage and took many vacations to Scotland with his family.

He was a man of faith and was grateful for the Christian heritage passed on from his parents and grandparents.  Growing up he attended 86th Street Gospel Hall, then Palos Hills Christian Assembly, and later LaGrange Bible Church.

Andy was a beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend, neighbor, and coworker, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.  He is survived by his wife, Kathy; his children Matt (Nicole), Colleen (Darren), Jenny, and John (Andrea); his grandchildren Jamie, Justin, Fiona, Isla, Ellie, Lachlan, and Rowan; his brothers Ross (Jimmie), Roger (Jan), and Denny (Donna), and his sister Darlene.

The visitation will be held from 3-5pm, with the memorial service immediately following at 5pm, on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at Hallowell & James Funeral Home,1025 W 55th St., Countryside, IL 60525.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to World Vision (www.worldvision.org).

  5. I have the fondest memories of Uncle Andy. I credit him for getting my love for ABBA started. I always admired his interest in music! Most of all, he was a really wonderful brother to my dad. I loved to see them laugh together and then as they got older, how they grew closer and spoke often on the phone or via FaceTime. I so enjoyed hearing them tell stories about their time growing up together in the McKendrick household. The laughter that resulted from our times all together is unmatched! I am grateful beyond measure that this is not the end. His story in heaven has only just started. Glory! Love to all of you, cousins, and to you, Aunt Kathy.
