Ret. Col John L. Glatz

John L. Glatz, 74, a longtime resident of Hinsdale, passed away July 14, 2023.

John was born in 1949 to Leopoldt and Emelia (Emilie) Glatz of Chicago.

John graduated from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb with his bachelor’s in education and his master’s in administration.

He began his career as an elementary and high school instructor and coach in Geneva before becoming a college administrator/instructor and assistant to the director of business at Chicago City Colleges.

A senior real estate services executive with diversified experience at U.S. Cellular, Staubach, JPA, McDonalds and EGI, John was, for three years, the state director and chairman for the Illinois Council of Shopping Centers. A retired colonel in the U.S. Army, he was a deputy chief of staff for intelligence (G-2). During his 28+ years of military service, he was awarded the following decorations and medals: Armed Forces Reserve, Meritorious Service, Army Commendation, Army Achievement, Army Reserve Components Achievement, National Defense Service, Global War on Terrorism Service, Armed Forces Reserve and an Army Service Ribbon.

John was also active in the Hinsdale AYSO, Hinsdale Hurricanes and Y Princesses Programs.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his in-laws, Joseph and Adeline Carewicz.

He is survived by his wife, Susan (Sue) Glatz, nee Carewicz; his children, Stephanie (Greg Jakubas), Joseph and Victoria (Sam Joseph) Glatz; his brother, Robert (Nancy) Glatz; his sisters-in-law, Pattie (Cliff) Vachlon and Mary Beth (Paul) Erickson; his nephews, Jason (Natalie) Glatz, Matthew and David Vachlon; and his nieces, Sarah Vachlon, Zoe and Rebecca Erickson.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 22, at St. Isaac Jogues Church, 306 W. Fourth St., Hinsdale.

A funeral mass will follow at 11 a.m. Interment is private.

  1. Very Saddened to learn of the passing of a fellow Officer, Soldier, Grand Father, Father and Husband. John and I were Great Friends and will be remembered for many things we both did in the Army. May John’s Family know that John is in Heaven looking down on ALL!

  2. I am so sorry to hear of John’s passing. May he rest in the arms of Christ. John was a good man; we worked together at US Cellular for a few years.

  3. Sorry to hear about John’s passing. At zoo events we always enjoyed John’s presence and his very interesting insights into technology.
    We will miss him.

  4. Sue, I was saddened to learned of John’s passing. I worked for him at McDonald’s. He was a amazing person to work for. He was someone who I respected and new I always had his support when I took on the ICSC convention. I remember spending time with you and your kids during the convention in Las Vegas. I have great memories of John and his team. Thoughts and prayers for you and your family. John was a good man and will be missed by all who knew him.

    I was researching old friends online to reconnect and came across John’s death notice. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing. I too am a new widow, Jim passed away 1/18/24, such a sad time for all of us. I will certainly keep you and your family in my prayers my dear friend.
