Dorothy D. Masters

Dorothy Masters, age 90,  of La Grange and Sheridan, Illinois passed away on October 2, 2021.

When we think about our Mom, one of the first things that comes to mind was her quiet strength.  She always seemed to hold it together in a crisis, and after 90 years of living, she had seen her fair share of crises.

She was adopted as an infant by Anson and Alice Devout in La Grange, IL.  They also had a biological son, Joseph, who was more than a brother and her best friend. She loved and admired her parents, and they her.

She met and started dating her future husband, Wilson Masters, in her Freshman year of high school and married him in 1951.  They were inseparable and had a long loving marriage of 56 years until Wilson’s passing in 2007.  Together they raised six children: Gregory, Caroline (John) Harig, Daniel, Linda (Chip) Alstrin, Nancy Kurowski, and Timothy (Cindra).  Her extended family includes 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren!

Dorothy was the most thoughtful and generous Mom.  You could always trust and count on her no matter what.  She never forgot a birthday or special occasion and would go out of her way to make you feel special or loved.  She wrote thousands of letters and cards over the years and it’s no wonder that she had many long lasting friendships, some going back to elementary school.

She had an adventurous spirit including motorcycle riding, zip lining, roller coasters, horseback riding, etc.   She also energetically taught fitness and dance classes with a warm smile.

Dorothy loved animals.  She had an affinity for anything with fur or feathers, especially dogs.  We lost count of the dogs that she took in and nurtured.  Any dog that was under her care practically “won the lottery”.  She donated very frequently to many animal rescue agencies.

Her other passions included playing bridge, taking long walks on her 40 acre homestead in all seasons, crocheting, and filling up her bird feeders every morning, and deepening her thirst for knowledge from books.

She passed after being very well cared for under hospice for her last two years.

Arrangements entrusted to Hallowell & James Funeral Home, Countryside.
