Robert “Bob” Sunyog

Robert “Bob” Sunyog, age 83, of Westmont. Beloved husband of Diana Sunyog for 56 wonderful years. Loving father of Scott (Evenin) Sunyog. Devoted grandfather of Kevin Sunyog. Dear brother of Barbara Orelup. Cherished uncle of Bernie (Katie) Orelup and Bob (Kim) Orelup. Fond great-uncle of Josh & Max Orelup and Ally, Owen & Emery Orelup. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, James and Julia Sunyog. Survived by many friends.

Bob was known for his amazing talent as a fine artist -specializing in watercolor, acrylic painting, pen and ink drawings and multi-dimensional wood dioramas.  He honed his craft at the American Academy of Art before embarking on a 35 year career as a commercial illustrator and designer.  He loved to draw and paint wildlife, nature and scenes of the American West.  He taught art for over 20 years at local schools and adult education programs.  His works have been featured in the Chicago Tribune and at the Morton Arboretum.  Bob and his wife Diana were residents of LaGrange Park, IL for 54 years  where they enjoyed gardening, model railroading and visiting local museums and theater.  An avid sports fan, his passion for the Chicago Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks was second to none.  A dedicated father and grandfather, he enjoyed attending his son Scott’s musical performances and his grandson Kevin’s travel hockey games.  In his retirement, he loved traveling in the American West, painting wildlife and nature scenes and enjoying time with his beloved family.

Visitation 3 to 9pm Sunday, September 19th at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside, where a Funeral Service will be held 10am on Monday, September 20th. Interment to follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Nature Artists Guild at the Morton Arboretum in Robert’s name are greatly appreciated.   1. Bob was a wonderful kind man who I am grateful to have know during his time spent in cardiac rehabilitation at lagrange
    May his loving memories surround your hearts and help you to heal during this sad and difficult time

    1. mr sunyog worked with my dad at the national safety council in chicago for fan many years where my dad was art director until his passing you have my sympathy to the family at this time may he rest in peace larry kenneth son of the late walter kenneth

  2. In retirement years Bob continued his love of creating art as one of the Charter Members of The Nature Artists Guild of the Morton Arboretum. This is where we became acquainted as artist friends. His illustrations and paintings showed his love of G od’s world and nature. He will be missed.

  4. Dear Diana, it’s been years since I’ve seen you and Bob. I am so sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.   5. Bob’s antics with Don Castro will always be a wonderful holiday memory for me. He was such a talented man and I feel blessed to own one of his small paintings. I will cherish this gem. My sympathy to his family members and his many friends at the Morton Arboretum.
