  2. The Memory Room

It isn’t right that we should lose someone we love before they get to grow old. It isn’t right, or fair, or logical, or expected, or even thinkable.

We take our young lives for granted, and we age without thinking about loss because we’re living, and the door is supposed to be closed to death for a while longer. . .

We forget that that door can open and slam shut at any time. We live and shop and play and go to work and come home, and thankfully, we don’t think about death until we have to. Sometimes we hear the door creaking on the hinges, and it starts to swing open and we know it’s coming soon, like when our parents or grandparents are dying, and we can close it for awhile and know that it’ll open again, but not soon– not anytime soon.

I’m jiggling the doorknob and pounding on the door. It’s locked and nobody will open it up….I turn around, and slide down with my back against it and sit on the floor. I’m in the memory room, with my back against the door that is locked to me, and with everyone else who has tried to jiggle the knob and say, “Wait! One more thing… I want to tell you one more thing before you go.”

Michelle, when we were all lonely young wives with little babies, we laughed and laughed and played at parks, and held our babies, and became sisters. You and Scott never ceased to make us laugh with your funny jokes and stories, and recaps of hilarious moments with the kids. You will never be forgotten and will live on forever in our hearts and in the joyful memories of the times we spent together.

  3. We were so sorry to hear of the loss of Michelle. She was a funny, sweet, intelligent woman who was a very devoted mother and wife. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the family and friends mourning her loss.
