Janet Otteman

Janet Otteman, age 87. Loving mother of three. Devoted grandmother of six. Jan was born January 2, 1930, and was raised in Hooper, Nebraska. She later graduated from the University of Nebraska, and taught music in the elementary education school system in Lincoln, Nebraska. Jan married a few years later and had three children. With her family, she moved to Des Moines, IA, Dallas, TX, and then to Palatine, IL, where she raised her children through high school and college. Jan was an outstanding mother. She was always there with a comforting hug, moral support, and discipline when needed. She never missed any of her children’s school or team sport events. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Girl Scout Leader, Piano Teacher, and taxi driver to three very active kids, and all of their friends. She was a tireless and very giving mother. Jan reentered the work force after her children were on their own. She later moved to Houston, TX, where all of her children and grandchildren were then living. Jan was as an amazing grandmother, as she was a mother to her own children. Jan’s final life move was to the wonderful community of Mayslake Village in Oak Brook, IL. Janet was immediately impressed with the friendly community, wonderful people, and Christian spirit. She felt at home here. Jan made many friends that she loved and appreciated. She enjoyed working in the library, playing bridge, and playing bingo (even though she hardly ever won). Throughout her life, Jan was kind to everyone, was always there to help, and was a great listener. She had a great sense of humor, too. Jan loved sports of all kinds. She will always be a Nebraska Huskers, Chicago Bears, Cubs, and, yes, a White Socks fan, too. If you wanted to talk sports, she was right there with you (even bowling). She had a love for music and singing, and was a member of various church choirs. She loved to go out to dinner, play bridge, and had many hobbies throughout the years. Even though she always had health issues, she always pushed forward with a positive attitude and created her own independence. Jan is loved by many! She will be missed.
