skaggsKimberlee Vowler Skaggs passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 23rd, following a valiant fight with cancer She was surrounded by her beloved family and many friends. Kim was born on August 15, 1958, in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, to the Reverend Robert Vowler and Joan Vowler. Kim’s father, Robert, predeceased her, as did her elder sister, Deborah.

Kim spent her childhood and early years in Pennsylvania, moving frequently, since her father, Robert, was a minister in the United Methodist Church. Growing up in a staunch Methodist family shaped Kim’s life in many ways and proved a blessing as she faced death with confidence in God and her firm belief that we will all be reunited one day in Heaven.

Kim became a member of the La Grange United Methodist Church when she and Joe arrived in La Grange and over the years served in many capacities. She was a member of the Bell Choir, served on the Committee charged with decorating the Church’s sanctuary at Christmas, and was a volunteer at the Church’s Summer Bible Camp.

Kim was a public spirited person, who volunteered her time frequently. She was a member of the Junior League while in Boston, served as the social director and then president of the La Grange Field Club, and her passion for gardening led her to join the La Grange Garden Club, in La Grange. In addition, Kim was a longtime member of the PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization) which helped support a non-profit college in Iowa.

In addition to her mother Joan, her husband, Joe, their children, Katie, John and Abby (and  beloved Golden Retriever, Elliot), Kim is survived by her late sister Deborah’s son, Nathaniel Posner, his father Bruce Posner,  her brother Robert Vowler, his wife Holly, their children Kyle and Christie, and her sister Melissa Waverka, her husband Mike, and children Emily, Jack, and Grace, and several grand nieces and nephews.   Kim is also survived by many friends, too numerous to mention, but who will all greatly miss her vivacious presence.

A memorial service for Kim will be held on Saturday, October 1st at 1:30 pm at the United Methodist Church, 100 W. Cossitt Avenue, La Grange, Illinois, where she will be interred at the Church’s Memorial Garden.

In lieu of flowers, Joe and their children ask that donations be made in Kim’s memory to either the Amita Health Cancer Institute and Outpatient  Center, 1 Salt Creek Lane, Hinsdale, Illinois 60521, or the Adventist St. Thomas Hospice, 119 E. Ogden Avenue, Suite 111, Hinsdale, Illinois 60521. Funeral info: 708-352-6500
