Joseph Michael GowgielJoseph Michael Gowgiel, 89, of Western Springs, DDS, Ph.D, and Professor of Anatomy at Loyola University Dental School.  Beloved father of Michael.  Loving grandfather of Claudia Gowgiel and Eva Bozek.  Devoted great-grandfather of Ernest Bozek.  Dear brother of the late Tony (Chris), the late Tom (Susan) Gowgiel, the late Mary Ann (Nelson) Cornell and Ann Therese (late James) Greist.  Fond uncle of many.  Visitation 2 to 9pm Thursday, Dec. 17th at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside.  Prayers 9:15am Friday, Dec. 18th at the funeral home to St. John of the Cross Church, Western Springs for Mass at 9:45am.  Entombment Resurrection Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions  to Catholic Charities appreciated.  Funeral home phone 708/352-6500

  1. He had a sparkle in his eye, kindness in his heart, generous with his knowledge. He set a standard as a gentleman.

  2. He was a kind, honest man who always made time to help any student that asked for it. He was one of my educational bright spots in my dental education. I will miss you Joe.

  3. Words like ‘humble’, ‘sincere’, ‘gentle’, and ‘dedicated’ are just a few I would choose to describe Dr. Gowgiel. His life inspired so many far and wide…he will be truly missed by anyone he met. God’s Peace to all his family, too.

  5. He was always there for an extra question or problem; my success in dentistry was because of his great teaching ability; he was tough but very fair.

  6. The twinkle in his eye, coupled with his absolute honesty and a great sense of humor only begin to describe Joe Gowgiel. He was a loyal colleague, so very generous with his time and energies and truly sincere in all his interactions. It has been a privilege to have worked with him and to learn from him. Joe, you are missed by so many you have touched. Rest in Peace.

  7. Joe Gowgiel was one of the most special people I knew during my tenure at Loyola School of Dentistry. He always had time for our students and always had a smile on his face. I thought of him often over the years and always welcomed news of him through Sue Collins. He will be missed.
