James ‘Jim’ Kozicki

James Kozicki, of Burr Ridge, formerly of Western Springs; beloved husband of Marilyn Kozicki; loving father of Jessica (Thomas) Jaworski & Scott (Lisa) Kozicki; proud grandfather of Sarah & Grace Jaworski and Chloe & Hazel Kozicki; dear brother of Janice Bossmin & Terence Kozicki; uncle, friend, & beloved colleague of many.
Jim grew up in Bridgeport, a Polish neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. He would often times retell us wonderful stories of what it was like growing up there – from serving as an altar boy at the 5 a.m. St. Mary’s daily Mass to developing an intimidating, 15-foot jump shot on the Bosley Park basketball court a few blocks from his home – an unofficial landmark where he spent countless enjoyable hours as a child.
During college, Jim worked several jobs while earning a Bachelor’s degree in English from DePaul University. His favorite job during this period of his life was working as a parking garage attendant during the overnight hours. He also became a diehard Chicago Cubs fan for the rest of his life. He continued his education and earned a Masters of Arts degree in English from Marquette University. It was here that he continued his blossoming relationship with Marilyn, who later became his wife. They graduated, became engaged, and enjoyed a beautiful marriage for over 50 years.
Professionally, Jim had an outstanding career for over 30 years as both an English Professor and a Playwright. He became the Chairman of the English Department for the City Colleges and served in this position for many years until retirement. He was a legendary teacher, a much beloved colleague, a loyal friend, and always, always, always, a fierce supporter and member of the Cook County Teachers Union Local 1600.
Jim traveled with Marilyn to destinations all over the world, including Europe, Russia and China. He loved spending time with his children and their families, and looked most forward to his Hilton Head Island vacations, where he enjoyed bike riding, playing golf and tennis, and enjoying the beautiful South Carolina beaches, while enjoying ice-cream at every opportunity.
Jim cherished all of his friends and family, especially his grandchildren. He never missed an opportunity to attend all of their many activities, such as gymnastics meets, dance performances, theater productions, soccer matches and piano recitals.
He was simply the best.

Mr. Kozicki and my Dad worked together at Daley. We would meet up at Brother Rice basketball games where Mr. Kozicki became an honorary “Crusader Crazy. I remember him getting a student to paint his nose orange for a playoff game at UIC. We also attended some baseball games including a memorable Cubs game in 2003 where we watched Mark Prior strike out 16 only to have Joe Borowski blow a lead in the 9th. Mr. Kozicki always told some great stories about his old neighborhood, teaching and Chicago sports. I hadn’t seen him in many years but I’ll miss him and remember him through those stories and memories.
Pa never missed a gymnastics meet or tennis match. Always the first one to stand up to cheer and the last one to sit down. I’ll forever miss his kindness and support. Can’t wait to celebrate his incredible life.
My dear Uncle touched so many people’s lives in such a positive way. He had a wonderful & eloquent way with words, a wicked sense of humour and a beautiful love for his family.
His stories about his work as a teacher were always so inspirational. His love of his students and his wish for their success in life were always so enjoyable to listen to.
His love and support of his family was even more fierce, with his tireless efforts over the decades to communicate with those of us who do not live near providing such joy.
I will forever miss his little notes to check in, sharing our photos, our chats, our laughs and our ice cream.
Visits to Chicago won’t be the same going forward, but I will forever take comfort in the memories.
Rest in peace, Uncle Jim. xx
