Joseph Raymond Hlavin, Jr., age 89, of Western Springs, IL and formerly of Cicero, IL; A US Air Force Lieutenant Veteran of the Korean War. Beloved husband of 55 years to the late Genrose (nee Smith). Loving father of James (Janet), Peter (Ligia), Karen Helm, and Justin (Kym) Hlavin. Devoted grandfather of 8; devoted great-grandfather of 2. Mr. Hlavin served as an attorney and corporate executive dealing with labor and employee relations for over 50 years, including: 29 years at Pullman Standard Company, 5 years at Becor Western, and 13 years in private practice. He also served as an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau. He is a graduate of St. Mel High School, Morton Junior College, twice of Loyola University, and in 1959, received his law degree from DePaul University. As an accomplished athlete in baseball, basketball, and track, he was honored as the outstanding student/athlete at Morton Jr. College in 1948 and later served as the President of the Western Springs Tennis Association. An active member of St. John of the Cross Parish in Western Springs, he served on the Parish Council and was involved in several athletic activities. Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30am on Saturday, March 17, at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside. Prayers 10:45am from the funeral home to St. John of the Cross Church, Western Springs for Mass at 11:15am. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
