Robert George Wendt

Robert George Wendt, 90, passed away peacefully at his home in Western Springs, November 9, 2017.  Bob’s love of knowledge and his boundless curiosity was the source of a creative life. Bob graduated from St. John’s Military Academy in Delafield, Wis., and then earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago.  He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.  Bob was a professional actor and dancer, business owner, and amateur gymnast, swimmer and diver.  He coached the Illinois Institute of Technology’s (IIT) Diving Team for 17 years. In 2005 Bob retired as owner of Wendt Furniture in Chicago, the business founded by his father in 1920.  Bob’s passion for the performing arts gave him the moniker in Chicago of “Front Row Bob”, as he held front row center seats to the opera, ballet and theatre for over 50 years. Survived by sister-in-law Virginia Wendt.  Also, nephews Ed Wendt III, Keith Wendt and Tom Wendt and nieces Claudia Vann, Cynthia Goetz, Linda Pissare and Laurie Koehler. Preceded in death by his beloved parents Edward Wendt Sr. and Caroline Wendt and his dear brother Edward Wendt Jr.  A visitation will be held at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th St., Countryside on November 14, 2017 from 9:00 am until time of service, 11:30 am. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Greater Chicago Food Depository or The Wirtz Center for Performing Arts are appreciated. Funeral information 708-352-6500
