Robert Ross Briney

Robert Ross Briney, M. D., of Hinsdale, IL, died on Sept. 9, 2017.  Beloved husband of Maria, nee Rivera.  Loving father of Sunny (Ed) Minx and Mimi Briney.  Dearest grandfather of Jessica and Jake.  Dear brother of Dr. William (Sue) Briney, Dr. Walter F. Briney, Jr. and the late Betty Ann Fairhead.  Uncle to many.  Born and raised in the City of Chicago, he attended public primary and secondary schools.  He studied pre-medicine at Wright Jr. College and the University of IL at Navy Pier.  Upon his graduation from the University of IL College of Medicine, he did an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Cook County Hospital, Chicago, from 1958-1963.  From 1963-1968, he had a 5-year Fellowship in pulmonary disease at Hines Veteran’s Hospital, Maywood, IL.  Dr. Briney was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Disease.  He was a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.  Dr. Briney entered the United States Army in 1968 and was assigned to the Tuberculosis Unit at Fitzsimons Army Hospital, Denver, CO.  His rank was Lt. Colonel.  Upon discharge from the Army in 1970, he settled in Hinsdale, IL and began his practice of pulmonary disease and internal medicine, joining staffs of Suburban Hospital and Hinsdale Hospital.  Dr. Briney practiced in the community for 40 years.  In addition to his private practice, he was the medical director of Suburban Hospital and a number of long-term care facilities.  Many of his colleagues recall him for his presidency of the Douglas Park Branch of the Chicago Medical Society.  Dr. Briney maintained his avid interest in both the practice and science of medicine while in retirement.  Memorial Visitation 10am until time of Memorial Service 11am Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017 at Hinsdale United Methodist Church, 945 S. Garfield Ave., Hinsdale, IL 60521.  Private inurnment Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Hinsdale United Methodist Church appreciated.  Arrangements entrusted to Hallowell & James Funeral Home at 708/352-6500
