Wanda Mary Guemmer

Wanda Mary Guemmer, 95, of LaGrange, Illinois, passed away at her home on Friday, July 21, 2017.  Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 28, 2017, followed at 11 a.m. by a Memorial Service at Hallowell & James Funeral Home, 1025 W. 55th Street, Countryside, Illinois.  Inurnment will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Wanda was born on August 14, 1921, to Dr. Frank and Wanda (Czaplewski) Wojniak in Chicago, Illinois.  She graduated from the Chicago Lab School and later earned her nursing degree. Wanda was united in marriage to Dr. Gerald E. Guemmer on March 22, 1945.  Following their marriage, they were stationed in Texas and then Berlin, Germany, before settling down in the Chicago area.   For many years, Wanda assisted her husband Jerry in his medical office.

Wanda loved gardening and music and belonged to the LaGrange Park Garden Club and the Western Springs Music Club.  Visitors to her home could always count on hearing the familiar sounds of WFMT Radio at any time of day. Wanda was also a lifetime member of the LaGrange Country Club, regularly golfing there as long as her health allowed.  She was also an excellent cook.

Wanda is survived by her sons, Frank (Joanne) of Park Falls, WI; Rick (Laureen) of Clinton, IA; her daughter, Suzi (George) Horn of Naperville, IL; her grandchildren, Emily (Casey) Turner of Clinton, IA; Jonathan Guemmer, currently serving in the U.S. Army in Kentucky; Geoffrey, Katherine, Allison, and Patrick Horn of Naperville, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Gerald F. Guemmer, her brother Frank Wojniak, her sisters Marianne Wollscheid and Catherine Chandler, and her brother-in-law Don Wollscheid.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Interfaith Community Partners, 111 W. Harris Avenue, LaGrange, IL 60525.

  1. Wanda was my idol. She was thirty years older than me, but she could walk so much better than I could. My goal was to work on my knee so that I could be just like Her. She will still be my inspiration, now and forever. A very lovely person.
